Physical Charakteristic Tests on Fish Feed Pelleted with Steaming or Hot Water Spraying Test
Abstract
Pelleted fish feed is a kind of solidified and mechanically compressed feed. Problem frequently arise is pellet is easily damaged, brittle, and broken during production, transportation and storage processing. It is hoped that the use of tapioca as an adhesive can handle the physical characteristics damages and improve the quality of pellet. Steaming process and hot water spraying is a feed manufacturing technique intended to make a well shape pellet by increasing the moisture content. This is important to make pellet shaping process easier.
The combined treatments for pelleting feeds were treatment without (A0), with steaming process (A1) and with hot-water spraying (A1), and tapioca addition at the level of 0 (B0), 2 (B1), 4 (B2) and 6% (B3). The experimental model was a factorial completed randomized design 2x4 with 5 replications.
Based on the experiment result it is concluded that the addition of tapioca level 4% (B2) functioning as an adhesive, and steaming process create the optimal hardness, stability in water and specific weight that pellets produced look more compact and they aren’t easily smashed, brittle and broken. Pelleting with hot water spraying and addition of 4% tapioca producted is the optimal and treatment to-product the best quality of pellets on its physical characteristics (JIIPB 2009 Vol 19 No 2: 132-142).
